Growing up with siblings will allow you to learn and hopefully master conflict-resolution skills! This all begins in very early childhood where you need to learn how to play with each other, share toys, try to get your parents attention, the list goes on forever…
You then practice these skills in kindergarten and school and in turn, they stay with you. If you’re someone with combative siblings, this will boost mental and emotional development and you will learn how to deal with such situations later in life.
If you’re someone with younger siblings that need support or is rather insecure, you will develop skills that are both nurturing and empathic, which will come in handy in any kind of situation!
FACT TWO
Are you the oldest sibling? Then congratulations are in order! Did you know that because older siblings receive more mentoring from their parents before their younger siblings come along, they have an advantage for their IQ and linguistic skills!
A lot of physical resources and emotional energy is often put into the first child up to the age of 2 or 3 years giving them a greater advantage than younger siblings.
FACT THREE
Who thought that parental conflict could benefit you in some way? Well, it can! Firstly, just like having combative siblings, having parents who often find themselves in conflict boosts maturity and will create a stronger bond because you and your siblings.
Often, siblings will look to each other for support and to find ways to cope as they understand and feel for the situation just as much as you. This goes for many situations in life where your sibling is the one person that will understand you and your situation best!
FACT FOUR
Oh, the stories of middle children… It has been proven (in birth order research) that the middle child often finds themselves less connected to their family and tend to be the first child to flee the nest!
They also tend to invest a great deal in friendships and ways to connect outside of the home as they often seek a sense of belonging outside the family. This is beneficial in many ways as they will be able to cope better away from home and be more independent than other siblings.
FACT FIVE
Now, the youngest child in the family will usually develop the ability to develop traits such as charming others and convincing anyone of anything! Quite the skill if you ask me! You might wonder why this is… Well, since they are the youngest and “smallest” child in the house they often feel that their older siblings take over and they don’t feel heard.
Since they are the last ones to join the family they will always gain their skills and knowledge after their siblings which makes them feel slightly inferior. That’s why they develop a great intuitive sense and learn how to charm and make everyone laugh!
